On September 22nd, VisionEnvoy attended the annual DSNO (Down Syndrome Network of Oregon) Buddy Walk event at the Millennium Plaza Park. Our wonderful volunteers from both VisionEnvoy and the Lake Oswego Lions Club helped set up the tables and chairs for the attendees, and worked on the grill as well as at the register to help out customers. Buddy Walk. This advocacy event aims to raise money for DSNO, while also creating a safe community for those who attend. They worked for several hours straight, serving hundreds of meals until 1:30 pm, and there were plenty of positive reviews from those who got lunch.
Thank you to everyone who participated and/or helped out!

On September 15th, VisionEnvoy teamed up with the Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation once again and hosted a fun nonprofit booth at the 2024 Cultural Xchange event, where the community comes together to celebrate the diverse cultures of the community and world. Channeling a bustling night market abroad, the multicultural festival features live music, dance performances, martial arts demonstrations, artisan and food vendors, and nonprofits.
We were lucky enough to be accepted as a nonprofit vendor, where we made and played hanfu -- traditional Chinese clothing -- related game where participants got to learn hanfu facts and got a free prize if they were able to answer the question regarding the specific dynasty's hanfu correctly. At our booth, we also showcased different varieties of Chinese hanfu and our volunteers wore hanfu to give the visitors an immersive experience. We also continued to do our free fairy hair, which was popular with the kids at the festival. It was a great time for everyone and we hope to be there again next year!

On July 20th, VisionEnvoy along with the Lake Oswego Lions Club attended the annual guided dog fun day at the Oregon Guided Dogs for the Blind. The Oregon Guided Dogs for the Blind provides young puppies to raisers who raise them to a certain age, where they eventually get trained to be proper service dogs. Along with the usual Lions Club cookout where club members grill burgers to provide to all the fun day participants, the youth leaders of Vision Envoy set up a booth to engage the participants in fun activities such as face painting and fairy hair. All the activities were offered free of charge, and it was quite a hit among both children and adults! Despite the heat, the members who were at the grill were also working hard to grill delicious burgers for the participants, and the event was extremely successful! In the end, members even got to witness the puppy-receiving ceremony! Can't wait to be there again next year!

On Thursday, July 4th, one of the hottest events of the year was happening: the annual 4th of July pancake breakfast at George Rogers Park in Lake Oswego! Club members carried out tables & chairs the day before, and officially started getting supplies ready the next day at 5:00am. Grills were getting fired up, tablecloths were getting laid on, drinks were being made. This year, the VisionEnvoy Branch set up a booth for hair tinsel, aka “fairy hair”, face painting, and press-on nails. Needless to say, both the breakfast and the booth were a hit, as the lines stretched out a long way! In total, we served over a thousand people. Thanks to everyone that helped out!

It’s Campaign Season! This year, VisionEnvoy members Jorie Liang & Carol Wang are co-leaders in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS)’s Student Visionaries of the Year Campaign (SVOY), with their team being known as the “Team Kancer Kickers.” VisionEnvoy members Lucy Xu, Jessie Pan, Sandy Tang, and Alice You have joined to raise money for this cause as well.
Kicked off on February 22nd, Student Visionaries of the Year is a 7-week development program to raise the most money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s mission: to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS is the largest nonprofit dedicated to creating a world without blood cancers and all donations go toward cutting-edge research and treatments. It has invested more than $1.6 billion in cancer research since 1949, leading to breakthroughs in immunotherapy, genomics, and personalized medicine that are improving and saving patients’ lives. Not only is LLS making a national footprint, our work is supporting local blood cancer research. At OHSU, LLS funds Dr. Brian Druker & Dr. Julia Maxson.
This year, there are 13 SVOY teams raising money for LLS, and the campaign leader that raises the most money by the end of seven weeks is named the “Student Visionary of the Year.” VisionEnvoy members Jorie and Carol decided to participate in this campaign because of their personal connection to cancer and grief. Jorie’s close family friend died of cancer when he was in his early 20’s. His death was a traumatic experience for his family. Carol’s close friend’s family member passed because of cancer. She recalls singing with her community at their funeral and the misery that affected everyone. They have decided to raise $30,000 dollars in the next seven weeks so that less people will go through the emotional journey of losing a loved one. United by a cause to fight blood cancers, team members of Team Kancer Kickers have all aspired to raise $500-$1,000 dollars for this campaign.
Over the past few months, the VisionEnvoy Club Branch has put in a great deal of effort into preparing for the campaign. Recently on Presidents Day Weekend, Jorie Liang & Carol Wang collaborated with fashion influencer Colleen Bourassa and fashion model Kerry Yu to film a promotional video for their campaign. Since the campaign’s kickoff on February 22nd, the team has made growing and significant funds for LLS. Our leaders and team members have been working hard securing corporate sponsorships, emailing and writing letters as personal asks, and social media promotion. For the Lake Oswego Lions, the months of March and April are dedicated to this cause.
(OUTDATED, FUNDRAISING HAS ENDED)

On Tuesday, December 5th, the Lake Oswego Lions and the VisionEnvoy Branch got together to have a Christmas party/potluck dinner at the Lakewood Center for the Arts. Different foods from different cultures were presented, making it an inclusive space. Afterwards, one of the members talked about the LLS (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) fundraiser. The fundraiser is a 7 week competition where people get into teams and try to raise the most money, and earn the LLS Student Visionary of the Year title. Then, members from the VisionEnvoy Branch showed off their talents, which included singing, playing instruments, and more. There was also a gift exchange, which made many of the members excited to receive presents. Last but not least, the Lake Oswego Lions showcased the winners & their drawings of the annual International Peace Poster contest. It was a great evening, which many enjoyed.

The Lunar New Year of 2023 fell on January 22nd, and all across the United States, Asian Americans celebrated this cherished holiday with their families. Through VisionEnvoy Club Branch’s chaperone Chunhua Yu, we learned that many residents at the retirement community of the Rose Schnitzer Towers didn’t have family nearby to celebrate Lunar New Year. Since the Lunar New Year is meant to be a time when people come together to celebrate bonds, we wanted to ensure that the senior residents at the Rose Schnitzer Towers could welcome peace in the new year with friends close aside. The VisionEnvoy Club Branch board members came together to put a spin on our monthly senior center performances by hosting a special Lunar New Year event at the Rose Schnitzer Towers!
VisionEnvoy members arrived early in the morning to start setting up the event. There was much to do, cutting and stringing up riddles, putting up tables and chairs, preparing mountains of food, and pinning up Lunar New Year posters and decor. In between each performance, VisionEnvoy youth members went up to MC and asked trivia questions about the Lunar New Year to the seniors. There was even a chance for seniors to come up on the stage themselves and introduce the traditional outfits they wore to the audience. To tie everything up, the performances ended with another runway walk with the models wearing traditional Chinese-inspired modern t-shirts.
After the performances, the seniors were led in various games and prizes. While the other stations were set up, the seniors solved riddles hung up by VE members. When the seniors answered a riddle correctly, they would be awarded with primary health care necessities, such as toothbrushes or sponges, that VE deemed would be sustainable and useful prizes. VE made sure to make the activities enjoyable for both volunteers and the senior residents, and many seniors particularly enjoyed the art station where they got to release their creative soul and create an oil pastel rabbit, as well as the sandbag throwing challenge, where seniors had to rely on their throwing skills and motor control. VE members also motivated the seniors to move through the jianzi kicking activity, where seniors would kick a weighted shuttlecock, or jianzi, in the air a minimum of 30 times. The sport of jianzi was very popular when these senior residents were younger, and many commented about how this activity made them remember their younger years.
Overall, this event was a success and brought a smile to everyone, from our senior friends to our wonderful VisionEnvoy Club Branch volunteers, who were more than willing to help and adapt to the situation. We sincerely appreciate the Rose Schnitzer Tower for letting us host this event, Lions Club member Alice Yz for her dedication to coordinate this event, Photographer Charlie Z. for volunteering to capture every single moment digitally, and the seniors who attended. Happy Late Lunar New Year!

On Sunday, September 18th, at the annual Lake Oswego Cultural Xchange at Millennium Plaza Park where the Lake Oswego Lions VisionEnvoy Club Branch members donned traditional Chinese Hanfu dresses and enthusiastically represented the Lake Oswego Lions Club and Lions International as well as the Chinese community! At this multicultural event, from noon till 8:00 pm, these young volunteers worked hard, promoting Lionism, teaching crafts and origami, showcasing the rich history of the dynasties of China, running trivia and spin the wheel games, all while enjoying the diverse atmosphere of the festival.
As LOLC President, Bonnie Roeder posted on the Lake Oswego Lions Club Facebook page, We are happy for this opportunity to "encourage peace and international understanding" a mission of Lions International. How will we understand if we don't know and how will we know without the help of those who do? Through this event, the young Lake Oswego Lions VisionEnvoy Club Branch members were able to collaborate and work as a team, experience the diversity of other nations, and reconnect with their respective cultures. Overall, it was a great day of service with lots more to come! Although this is the first time the young VisionEnvoy members organized this event, their booth very successfully attracted lots of visits from youth and adults.

VisionEnvoy members were busy this recent 4th of July helping the Lake Oswego Lions at their annual Pancake Breakfest. Under the supervision two parents, our young volunteers managed the gluten free section on their own, mixing, cooking, flipping, and serving a steady stream of pancakes. Thanks to the patient Sheldon Penner, owner of Chris Cakes NW, VisionEnvoy members were also given the privilege to try their hand at making normal pancakes, and found out that they were a lot messier! From helping set up to packing all the equipment away, VisionEnvoy members worked above and beyond on this happy holiday.

Understanding the importance of maintaining hygiene as students returned to in-person learning, we stepped in to support the school’s efforts in keeping students and staff safe.
