One of our newest projects includes being a part of a research club, where our members volunteer to recruit people for myopia and glaucoma research. Some of the advisors for this project include Alice Yang, PhD and Yali Jia, PhD. This is a great opportunity for our members to learn more about myopia (nearsightedness), and glaucoma, as well as about scientific methods and eye anatomy. If you want to learn more about this study, please contact us! Our research club is dedicated to exploring the early onset of myopia and glaucoma, focusing on younger individuals. This project aims to understand the initial stages of these vision conditions, often overlooked in younger populations. By studying early indicators and risk factors, we hope to contribute valuable insights that could lead to better prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies.
One of our executive presidents, Jorie Liang, is involved in the local chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which raises funds to support causes related to blood cancers. In 2024, Jorie and another member of Vision Envoy, Carol Wang, co-led a 2024 Student Visionaries of the Year team. In partnership with VisionEnvoy, we set up booths at local super markets to sell jewelry that were donated by local community members. All funds were donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma campaign (Kancer Kickers) led by Jorie. At the end, a total of 43,000+ dollars were raised, and team Kancer Kickers won first place!!
Through our many fundraisers, we can provide donations to the Sight & Hearing Foundation. We are passionate not only because it is one of the pillars of the Lions Club, but also because many of our members experience myopia and astigmatism, and we know how difficult it is if people are not provided with the best eye care for them.
By organizing various engaging events—such as selling handmade greeting cards, jewelry, face painting and more—we raise essential funds and awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with sight and hearing challenges.
These initiatives foster community involvement and encourage participants to learn more about the importance of accessible resources and support services. Together, we can empower individuals to provide inclusion and accessibility for all. Join us in our fundraising efforts to support this important cause!
All of our members and youth leaders have diverse cultural backgrounds that are sometimes under-represented in our communities. To spread awareness and represent our unique culture, we often set up booths during events such as the Lake Oswego Cultural Exchange Day to encourage people to learn about our culture. We often dress up in traditional clothing and come up with fun ways to learn cultural facts, such as flashcard games with prizes. We all have a lot of fun telling people about our backgrounds and the history of where we came from. It is also an engaging way to have the youth reconnect to their culture.
Your engagement helps promote understanding and empathy across diverse communities, fostering a more inclusive and enriched society. Together, we can make a positive impact and celebrate the beauty of our shared human experience. We truly appreciate your commitment to this important cause!
One of the projects of the Lions Club include collecting plastic bags all around the city and eventually press them into plastic benches to be used by the community. This projects upholds the environment pillar of the Lions Club and encourages for recycling and upcycling.
Plastic collection promotes environmental sustainability and reduces pollution. By actively participating in plastic collection initiatives, community members help prevent plastic waste from entering landfills and oceans, protecting local wildlife and ecosystems. These efforts also raise awareness about the importance of recycling and responsible waste management, encouraging healthier habits among residents. Additionally, plastic collection can foster community spirit, bringing people together for a common goal and creating opportunities for education and advocacy around environmental issues. Ultimately, these initiatives contribute to a cleaner, safer, and more vibrant community for everyone.
We know that it is important for elder members of the community to be recognized and engaged in activities just like the youth. Therefore, we often set up activities led by our youth leaders and members such as face painting and fairy hair during the holidays at senior centers, as well as songs for seniors during weekends. Through these events, the youth members of the community can engage in thoughtful conversations with older generations, and gain important insights on life.
Engaging in activities and fun for seniors promotes physical health, mental well-being, and social interaction. Participating in enjoyable activities helps everryone maintain mobility, improve cognitive function, and reduce the risk of depression and loneliness. These activities foster connections with peers, enhancing their sense of belonging and community. Moreover, creative and recreational pursuits can stimulate the mind, encouraging lifelong learning and personal growth.
The Lakw Oswego Lions Club and VisionEnvoy branch does annual toy drives so the community can have a great time during the holidays.
Toy drives are community initiatives that collect and distribute toys to children, often during the holiday season. They bring joy to kids, especially those from low-income families, by ensuring they receive gifts they might not otherwise get. These drives foster a sense of unity, compassion, and shared responsibility within the community, while also supporting families who may struggle financially. They promote volunteerism and a culture of giving, helping participants feel more connected and engaged. Additionally, toy drives teach children valuable lessons about empathy and generosity, contributing to a positive, supportive community environment.
The Lake Oswego Lions Club and VisionEnvoy Branch sets up eyeglass collection boxes all around the community, such as in front of supermarkets, inside local middle and highschools, as well as local senior homes. This gives our community the opportunity to donate old and unused glasses to us to be recycled and sorted through. Afterwards, they will be given a new life and provided to people without proper access to good eyecare or cannot afford eyeglasses. If you have old or unused eyeglasses, please contact us or drop them off at an eyeglass collection site near you!
VisionEnvoy often organizes seasonal food drives with the help of the Lions Club. We collect canned food and other foods accepted at the food banks from the community, and donate them to local food banks in order to help those in need.
Food drives are beneficial for the community as they address food insecurity by providing essential nourishment to individuals and families in need. These initiatives foster a sense of solidarity and compassion among community members, encouraging collective action to support those facing hardships. Food drives also raise awareness about hunger issues, promoting ongoing conversations about access to resources.
Additionally, they strengthen local networks by connecting volunteers, organizations, and donors, creating a unified effort to combat hunger. Ultimately, food drives not only supply immediate relief but also contribute to a more compassionate and resilient community.
VisionEnvoy partners with the Lions Club to host cancer walks that uphold one of the Lion's Club's five main pillars. We have hosted walks during the local farmer's market uploading childhood cancer, and one of our executive youth presidents Jorie Liang also recently led a campaign partnered with VisionEnvoy to support and raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Portland chapter.
These events raise critical funds for cancer research, treatment, and support services, helping to advance the fight against cancer. They also increase awareness about cancer prevention and early detection, educating participants and the broader community on important health issues. Cancer walks foster a sense of community and support among survivors, caregivers, and advocates, providing a platform for sharing stories and building connections. Lastly, these events promote physical activity and well-being, encouraging participants to engage in a healthy lifestyle. Our cancer walks create a powerful impact by uniting people in the shared goal of combating cancer .
One of the community projects our members participate is "Nails for Seniors".
These gatherings provide free nail care and grooming services to older adults, promoting dignity, well-being, and social interaction. By offering a friendly space for relaxation and conversation, “Nails for Seniors” events help alleviate isolation and build stronger connections between community members. Volunteers and participants alike benefit from meaningful engagement, fostering empathy and support for older adults. Through these efforts, VisionEnvoy continues to champion compassion, creating a more caring and inclusive environment for everyone.
VisionEnvoy also offers dog-sitting services in partnership with the Lions Club. These sessions provide reliable, compassionate care for pets whose owners may face challenges due to health, financial constraints, or busy schedules. By ensuring beloved pets receive proper attention and exercise, the program alleviates stress on families while fostering stronger community ties. Volunteers and dog owners alike benefit from shared experiences and a collective love for animals, promoting empathy and mutual support. Through dog-sitting, we continues to nurture a caring, resilient community where every member’s well-being is valued.
